Estimator Role and Responsibilities
Position Title: Estimator
Location: Sydney, NSW / VA
Department: Estimating
Reports To: Project Manager / Owner
Role Overview: The Estimator at James and Co Residential Builders is responsible for preparing accurate and detailed project estimates for small works and remedial projects. This role involves reviewing qualified leads and home assessment reports, gathering necessary information, and producing comprehensive project quotes using Excel. The Estimator will work closely with the Salesperson, Project Manager, and Owner to ensure all estimates are thorough and ready for client presentation.
Key Responsibilities:
Reviewing Qualified Leads:
Receive and review qualified leads from the Salesperson.
Examine home assessment reports provided by the Project Manager/Owner.
Information Absorption:
Absorb and analyze all information provided via cloud platforms (Monday.com, Dropbox, Google Drive, etc.).
Understand project requirements, constraints, and objectives.
Project Planning:
Determine the best route forward for each project based on the information provided.
Prepare sketches or diagrams of the proposed work when necessary.
List out all required materials and tasks for the project.
Estimate Preparation:
Build out detailed project quotes using Excel.
Utilize reference sheets and data from previous projects to inform estimates.
Ensure all estimates are accurate, detailed, and in line with company standards.
Material Identification and Matching:
Identify materials used in homes from the 1960s to the present.
Determine the best matches for old materials with those available currently.
Provide solutions that maintain the integrity and appearance of the original structure.
Collaboration:
Collaborate with the Project Manager/Owner to review and refine project estimates.
Incorporate feedback and make necessary adjustments to estimates.
Documentation and Reporting:
Maintain organized records of all estimates and related documents.
Prepare final project estimates for presentation to the Project Manager/Owner.
Final Quote Submission:
Submit finalized quotes to the Salesperson for client presentation and deal closure.
Ensure all estimates are approved by the Project Manager/Owner before submission.
Continuous Improvement:
Continuously improve estimating skills and knowledge through training and professional development opportunities.
Stay updated on the latest construction techniques, materials, and industry best practices.

Qualifications and Skills:
Proven experience as an estimator or in a similar role, preferably in the construction industry.
Strong understanding of construction techniques, materials, and processes.
Proficiency in using Excel for building and managing project estimates.
Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
Ability to read and interpret project reports and sketches.
Strong organizational and time-management skills.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to work well in a team environment.
Commitment to accuracy and attention to detail.
Ability to identify and match old materials with current options available in the market.
Additional Requirements:
Experience with cloud platforms such as Monday.com, Dropbox, or Google Drive (preferred).
Valid driver's license and reliable transportation (preferred).
Flexibility to work overtime and weekends as needed to meet project deadlines.
High school diploma or equivalent; additional qualifications in construction or estimating are a plus.
